4mm/EM Gauge
Presented by Richard Nice
Barnard Castle is situated in County Durham and was part of the North Eastern Region. At the station, the lines from Bishop Auckland and Darlington combined and Traffic headed westwards over the fearsome gradients to Stainmore Summit, Kirkby Stephen and the LM Region at Tebay and Penrith. You will see some westbound trains double headed or loose coupled freights banked in the rear. Summer Saturday trains to and from Blackpool are also represented.
The layout is an accurate representation of the station as it existed in late 1954, although the locos and stock which plied the route until closure in 1962 are seen running. After 1954 the eastern end of the station was rationalised, and the bay platform and signal bridge were removed.
The layout has hand-built track, points and signals are operated by servo motors. Locos are controlled using Blue Railway wireless DC controllers which give the freedom to move around the layout without being tethered to a cable. The fiddle yard is much older and has been repurposed from my previous layout of Stainmore Summit.
