Pine Bluff’s Freight Yard (HO)

3.5mm/HO Gauge
Presented by Alton Model Railway Group – American Section

Pine Bluffs Freight Yard is one element of a modular layout from the American Section of Alton Model Railway Group.  The Section created the fictitious Pine Bluffs and cedar Falls Railroad in 1993 and has been exhibiting ‘Pine Bluffs Depot’ since 1995.  The new Freight Yard layout continues on from the Depot (the road bridge being the division between the two elements).  Modelled in HO scale (3.5mm to 1ft), the ‘Freight Yard’ layout is designed to combine continuous ‘train watching’, including ‘passing loop’ operations, with the variety of small freight yard switching.

Pine Bluffs Freight Yard is owned by the Pine Bluffs and Ceda Falls Railroad (PBCFRR) which is based in Campbell County in the US State of Colorado and the freight yard is the main depot for the region.  It handles a wide range of traffic including piggy back road trailers, tank cars for the nearby Ewing Oil terminal, cut lumber and lumber products.  In addition, there is a major passing loop on the route from Denver to Colorado; a necessity for the single-track main line.  The loop was built in 1943 to handle the much-increased traffic that was generated by the 2nd World War and the nearby Fort Baxter.
