Stanhope Brewery (OO)

4mm/OO Gauge
Presented by Plymouth & South East Cornwall Model Railway Club

The layout had a long gestation, it originally started as one of our club members building a tandem layout, which morphed into an inglenook layout on a bare baseboard.  During testing it was decided that this was too restrictive and boring, so a second board was added with a loop and additional siding.  At this juncture it was still only plain boards, with track.  So after further discussions within the club, it was decided that it would be some sort of industrial setting, but what?  Some bright spark said ‘what about a brewery?’  And that’s how it came to be.

The next question was what period were we going to use?  Some locos and stock had been purchased for an on-going layout which was going to be set somewhere in the Midlands, and so that set the location and a time period of the late 1950s.

Now we needed a name, as one of the members lived near Stanhope Road, which sounded suitably ‘up North’, that’s how we got to what you see today.

All the trackwork is hand-built code 75 bullhead rail soldered on copper-clad sleepers and timbers.

The buildings are a mixture of scratch-built and kits, from various sources some modified to suit the location.

The rolling stock is a mixture of kit-built and RTR, from the usual manufacturers.
